this monday morning veteran's day. hi erica. >> good morning, darya. gray skies overlooking the san francisco sky line, temperatures in the 40s and 50s. high clouds will be expected later today. temperatures will range from the upper 50s along the coast to the mid-60s. take a look. we could see 70s for some of the warmer spots. we could see rain drops for tomorrow. i'll bring you the seven-day forecast and talk about the likelihood for rain coming up in 15 minutes. here is dan. hey, erica. the top spot is smoldering, 80, overturned because of a big rig and a backup extending to alamo. the right lane is shut down and san francisco, 101, a wreck and chavez and backing up to the upper deck. at the bay bridge toll plaza, good shape and no delays and the same for the san mateo bridge where things are moving

well eastbound and westbound. the golden gate bridge in good shape at this hour. thanks a lot, dan. 7:01, redwood city road is opened as fire crews on the scene. we have the latest. . >> reporter: good news, the fire department lifted the shelter in place so you can leave your house without any concern for any breathing problems. we want to show you a shot from the cam here we are quite a distance away, most of the heavy lifting is done and it took about 16 plus hours or so. this fire 120 yesterday afternoon afternoon and they fought it until maybe 7:00 this morning. just a couple of minutes ago where we saw a couple of firefighters leave the scene here. it looks like the heavy lifting is behind them. here is video that we got after

the fire started. the cause of the fire still under investigation. they believe because this is a place that crushes cars and have gotten into accidents. the cars are supposed to be stripped down completely but certain parts like plastic dashboards that perhaps during the crushing process, sparks and friction that might have caused the fire to start. we have got a chance to talk to the redwood city fire chief and here is his speculation on what might have caused the fire. >> a lot of times what we have is these cars that it is generally the cars that they have crushed and they are required to have the combustible materials removed and they can't catch everything and a lot of times it takes something small that is not seen or caught in the middle of the rubbage that gets compacted and once it gets going we can't get to it right away. >> they monitored the situation

at 2:00 in the morning, hot spots are so stubborn they poured water on the spots. they will be here to monitor the situation. the fire started at 1:20 on a holiday weekend, people out and fortunately they did not see any spike in the number of calls to the fire department and the volume pretty much was consistent for a typical sunday afternoon. back to you, darya. thanks a lot, wil. we are getting the latest pictures from the philippine and officials fear the death toll from the powerful typhoon could reach ten thousand or more. now right now the official death toll at 950. authorities say that the typhoon is affected at least two million people in 41 provinces. u.s. marines now arriving to provide relief in the central philippines. and bay area residents are jumping into action over an outpouring of support for those that have lost everything.

a local nonprofit held a relief drive in san bruno where people dropped off nonperishable items like cereal and dry noodles and toothbrushes, they fill 47 boxes and collected $1600 that will be turned to the philippine red cross. many of those that gave have friends and families in the affected area. >> many families have been affected one way or the other. it is heavy on the heart but we want to send the best out. send the best out to them. >> a local shipping company has volunteered to deliver the boxes but it will take a month for the supplies to reach the central philippines. >> president obama announcing that the u.s. is providing significant humanitarian aid and to assist relief efforts. the president went on to praise the philippine people from the incredible resiliency. u.s. marines on the grounds in the philippines. thanks a lot, mark.

a heart breaking story with a

great ending. a young deer roaming through after a biologist removed this arrow from the buck's snout. now, this picture taken back on november 1st, a woman new jersey saw this in her yard. the biologist were able to catch the deer on saturday. they removed the arrows you see here. and they say that no major arteries or organs were damaged and the deer's chance for survival are excellent and released it of the weekend. in brooklyn, four people are dead after a man opened fire at a row house. the shooting happened after midnight in bush wick, the man came to the row house with a rifle and killed three people and himself. the police say that they did know each other, the victims and the shooter. they are looking into a possible link to a music band. one other person was shot but is expected to survive. coming up next on the kron4

7:14, a two thousand pound satellite fell out of orbit and luckily did not hit anyone on the ground. it burned up in the atmosphere. what it looked like before it made reentry. there was a concern that the debris may make it to the ground and strike a populated area. but that turned out not to be the case. engineers say it disintegrated. it outlasted its mission which was to study ocean batteries. it finally ended operations and fell to earth. there is more, i know you like space stories. the soshi olympic torch is back on eat. the capsule carried the torch and three astronauts landed safely today. the unlit torch was brought to the iss thursday. we told you about this last week on the kron4 morning news. and two russia crew members took the torch on a space walk

on saturday. always cool to look at not just for two hours in a movie theater. i'm not saying i don't like the news story but don't like gravity, erica. that's probably the one hundredth time i have heard that and the sandra bullock going around. and as we take a live look from the roof camera, the sun trying to come out. you can see it is brighter out there as you head out the door this morning. a lot of folks have the day off for veteran's day. temperatures really not too bad. in the upper 40s, low 50s. san francisco very mild at 54 degrees. but take a look at your visibility chart, down to zero miles for napa and six miles of visibility in oakland. right now we are seeing 8 miles of visibility around sfo and tracking some flight delays averaging one hour on arriving flights. higher clouds and sunshine and it looks like temperatures just a touch cooler than what we

experienced yesterday. to break town the numbers. 66 for pato alto and fremont 66 and low 70s for the alden valley in the east bay, low 70s in walnut creek and danville, 66 is the high in castro valley. we will have temperatures in the low 60s for san bruno and downtown san francisco. only going to see a reading of 157 if you are heading to ocean beach. we could see rain drops for tomorrow but the models starting to back you have on that. we will see an increase in cloud cover for the bay area. any rain we do see will be north of the golden gate bridge. in the north bay, keep those umbrellas out and the models, really starting to back off on that chance. your seven day around the bay forecast, highlights warmer weather by midweek and cooling back down as we transition in the weekend. expect partly cloudy skies saturday and sunday with your highs approaching the upper 60s and low 70s. 7:17 on the clock and on the

will get worse as we go in the next year with steeper cuts already expected to kick in january. this year's cuts weren't as bad because government agencies had extra money in rainy day funds. the pentagon used more than five billion dollars in unspent money they had from previous years to ease their 39 billion in sequester cuts. furloughs originally scheduled for 11 days were scaled back to six. the justice department found more than five hundred million in similar money. that allowed agencies like the f.b.i. to avoid furloughs together this year. but come in january with the rainy day money gone and those steeper cuts that kick in on january first, they are warning that government services and the furloughs will be worse in 2014. after two days of negotiations, diplomats failed to end the nuclear program in iran. secretary state john kerry was negotiating with iran's leaders, the agreement would

according to the bmv, bike readers have the same responsibilities as motorists and subject to the same rules and regulations. this means that bicyclallists cannot kick it in the crosswalk waiting for the light to change. >> you are required to wait at the lim line like drivers wait. this is a bad example. you have to wait at the limit line just like -- forget it. my point and by the way, car drivers and motorcyclists, you are not making it easy for me. you cannot -- actually you can do whatever you want but you are not permitted to stop in the crosswalk when waiting for the light to change. here is a great example over on market street, this is a green box where bicyclists are supposed to wait and this is supposed to be for bikes. shaking my head. anyway, where was i? oh, yes, you are supposed to stop and

interrupted by this accident. westbound 80 approaching highway 12 and the right lane is shut down and will be shut down for sometime. it will take some time to get through the backup which now extends to alamo. on the back bridge things moving well, westbound to san francisco and there was a backup on the upper deck due to an accident on south 101. highway 92 looking good. both directions moving westbound. hayward, no delays whatsoever and the golden gate bridge moving well southbound and westbound. thank you very much. dan, a redwood city road opened this morning and crews on the scene of recycling plant. the good news is that things are improving, kron4 wil tran at the scene with the latest. wil. >> much better, james, lifted the shelter in place and you are free to move about without

any fears of breathing problems and the shelter in place was there for at least 16 hours. you can see behind me the recycling plant is off in the distance. we don't see the hot spots anymore. the only crew there are investigators. here is video that we got after it started. it happened at around 1:20 on sunday afternoon. the cause of the fire obviously still under investigation. but the fire department believes because this is a recycling plant that deals mostly with crushed cars, they have to strip the cars before it goes into the facility but sometimes according to the fire chief, they forget to remove certain materials or it is impossible to remove the materials. once they crush it, it creates so much friction and sparks and perhaps that might have caused the fire and then overnight the hot spots gave them all kinds of problems that they pretty much sprayed water on the mounds of metal for at least four to five hours using cranes and lifting up the scraps of metal to get to the heart of

the fire. it looks like it is out and no injuries to report and because it was a shelter in place, a lot of people took that warning and they stayed in place and nobody had to go to the hospital for any breathing problems and the volume of calls that they got after the fire started, the fire chief says pretty much consistent with your typical sunday afternoon. back to you, james. very good. wil, tank you for the update, mark. following the latest out of the philippine with typhoon haiyan that battered the philippine friday. one of the strongest cyclones ever recorded. widespread devastation and death toll at 950 and estimates it could climb over ten thousand. u.s. marines have arrived and with a large fill low pino community. many in church. >> the church full of thoughts

up. >> we go to a story about the kidnapper shot and killed by a heroic louisiana man looking for his abducted cousin arsono. she is home from the hospital and back with her 2-year-old son three days after being kidnapped and stabbed by the father of her child. authorities had been searching for 29-year-old scott thomas near lafayette avenue after he arrived at a daycare center on wednesday and confronted 29- year-old bethny. thomas allegedly forced her into his vehicle and drove away. her two-year-old son was left inside her car at the daycare. ar accepto's cousin was looking for he when he kicked in the back door of an abandoned house and shot and killed her kidnapper. that cousin whose name was withheld by the sheriff's department says he heard screams coming from the house. this story is getting a lot of

visibility still an issue for concord, livermore and seeing a mile in napa and hearing of delays averaging about an hour. so call ahead and check with your carrier, the low clouds will turn to high clouds. by lunchtime expect mainly 60s throughout the entire bay area. but by 3:00 today. it looks like 70s for livermore and temperatures in the 60s by 8:00 this evening. quick look at the afternoon highs, fairfield 71 and 67 in okay land and we will stay in the low 60s for downtown san francisco and keep temperatures in the upper 50s for daly city. what it going to happen can we will see the cloud cover increase for the rest of the day into the evening hours and could actually see a few sprinkles waking up tomorrow. it doesn't look too likely and chances are starting to back off and looking for a 10% chance. if we see rain drops it will be north of the bridge. warmer wednesday by wednesday and expect a cool down for the

burning since yesterday. wil tran has more on that. wil. >> reporter: well, darya, hear is seaport boulevard. and the fire department is investigating what caused the fire. there was smoke and hot spots that gave them problems where they had to spray water for four to five hours. shortly before 7:00 this morning, they were able to remove the fire engines and leave this location. the investigators are on the scene to try to find out why the fire started. obviously it deals with metal. because there are other parts involved. this is a facility that crushes cars and they usually have to strip the car down completely and a process that is not always thorough, plastic in the cars that sometimes don't get removed. perhaps during the crushing process and there is a lot of friction and heat and sparks and according to the fire department, they believe that

might have caused the fire that started at around 1:20 yesterday afternoon. here is video. it lasted for 16 or 17 hours forcing the fire department to have a shelter in place. they finally lifted the shelter in place at around 6:50 this morning. 17 hours, 16 hours in the fight, that's when they felt it was safe enough to tell people to leave their homes. before that, people were told to stay in there unless they had to leave for emergencies. fortunately, because of the windy conditions out here and the breezy conditions, they didn't see anybody go to the hospital for any respiratory problems and they were able to make sure that fire was contained at this location, no injuries to firefighters. back to you. all right, thanks a lot. james, following the latest out of the philippine this morning where the death toll is feared to reach ten thousand or more. right now the official count is right around 950 but just

reading the latest coming out of the philippine the bodies remain uncounted as survivors are climbing over these bodies searching for food and supplies. the typhoon has affected two million people in 41 provinces and u.s. marines have arrived for relief efforts and the typhoon dying out over main lane china. as you can see the devastation is incredible. look at the debris in the streets. people can't even walk through the streets. they are climbing over what used to be their city. >> and bay area residents are jumping into action with an outpouring of support for those that have lost everything. a local nonprofit holding a relief drive and people dropping off nonperishable items like cereal and dry food and toothbrushes and in four hours, they have collected $1600 and 4700 boxes to be turned over to red cross. many that gave have family and

a young deer is roaming free in new jersey. after biologists removed an arrow from its head. it is almost too incredible to believe. it pierced the deer's head. you can see it going through the snout. the injured deer spotted on november 1st. biologists removed it on saturday. no organs were damaged by that arrow and the deer's chances for survival are excellent. remarkable. a worker in an exotic cat sanctuary was killed by one of her animals in her care. it happened in sherman oregon.

january 1st. with this year's sequester, federal agencies helped them weather through the cuts. for instance the pentagon used more than five billion dollars in unspent money to ease the 39 billion-dollar budget cuts. furloughs were cut back to six days, the justice department, another example found more than five hundred million dollars in similar money that allowed agencies like the f.b.i. to allow furloughs and without the rainy day money and with steeper cuts for january, the cuts to furloughs are expected to be even worse and that could have a ripple effect for the economy. darya. after days of negotiation, diplomats failed to reach a deal that put an end to the nuclear program. secretary of state john kerry and the union were meeting in geneva with negotiators trying to come to a deal with the iranian leaders but the deals would have eased the economic sanctions but since there is no

has been covering the scene. everything better. >> reporter: much better, i am sensitive to breathing issues and when i first got here it was nasty and plastic smell in the air and that's long gone and they lifted the shelter in place before 7:00. the recycling facility in the distance and you can see how busy seaport boulevard is. they pretty much pulled out at 7:15 in the morning. the only crews still at the facility are the investigators. here is video that we got after the fire started. it started at around 1:20 on sunday afternoon. that immediately brought the authorities to issue a shelter in place for redwood city and parts of southern alameda county. that's how bad it was with the fumes and the plastic as well as the metal. we got a chance to talk to the fire department. how can metal possibly catch on fire and he says this is a place that they take cars in accidents and bring them here and crush them and before they do that they have to strip the

materials that inside there like plastic parts and sometimes they don't catch it or it is not possible for them to remove it and while they crush it, there is a lot of heat and sparks and they speculate that might have caused the fire. fortunately nobody went to the hospital because of respiratory issues and no injuries to firefighters. thanks a lot, wil. >> following what is happening right now in the philippine, rescue efforts under way in the wake of typhoon haiyan and the death toll could reach ten thousand or more. the devastation is incredible when you look at the video at the pictures coming out of that world. 950 deaths have been confirmed but again, many of the areas heaviest hit are inassessable to rescue workers and they are worried that bodies are buried beneath the rubble. authorities say friday's typhoon has affected at least two million people in 41 provinces, this is an enormous

scale of destruction that u.s. marines are dealing with as well. they arrived today to help with the relief efforts, the typhoon is dying down over mainland china but the devastation is incredible. a lot of people have been coming together to raise funds to send supplies. at this point, everything we send is not enough but the efforts continue. mark. >> residents are helping out to show their support for people that have lost everything. a local nonprofit held a relief drive in san bruno where people dropped off island like cereal and toothbrushes and shampoo and it took only a short time to fill 47 boxes and $1600 was raised. many that gave have friends and family in the affected area. >> everyone has been affected and it is heavy on the hearts but we just want to send the
